After years of petitioning, Campbell High School in Honolulu has been granted a $1 million budget to begin the planning and design of a new sports complex.
According to Hawaii News Now, the governor sent an email to senator-elect Kurt Fevella Monday night confirming the amount.
“He released that money yesterday so it’s really a big celebration for the community of Ewa Beach because we was waiting for that,” Fevella said.
In 2018, West Oahu lawmakers were turned down for a request of $30 million to put toward athletics facilities at Campbell, the state’s largest public school.
The lack of facilities has not only been an inconvenience for student athletes — it has also inspired legal challenges.
The American Civil Liberties Union has leveled a suit against the Department of Education alleging Title IX violations due to inadequate locker room facilities.
Fevrella told reporters that the timing of the advance toward funding the project was not a result of the lawsuit, but the planned complex will include men’s and women’s locker rooms.
