Michigan AG May Bring Suit Against Fitness Center

A Lansing, Mich., fitness center has caught the attention of the state attorney general for allegedly soliciting memberships while in the process of being evicted from its space.

TV station WINS reports that Go Workout, a women-only gym, continued to sell memberships despite the fact that they were being evicted from their location at a shopping center and relocating to a much smaller space at a nearby hotel. There, members would be sharing limited equipment with mixed-gender hotel guests.

A statement by the attorney general’s office indicates that more than 20 complaints have been filed against the gym and owner Steve Millenbach. Members who signed up and paid start-up fees and advance dues were not issued refunds, despite their assumption of having access to a larger, single-gender space.

State attorney general Dana Nessel issued a cease-and-desist order to Go Workout, and may bring a suit under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act if it doesn’t respond to the notice by Feb. 11.

“We count on companies to uphold their end of the law,” Nessell told WINS. “And when they don’t, we stand ready to protect Michigan consumers.”
