On Monday, Montana State University officially reopened the Marga Hosaeus Fitness Center after the roof caved in over two of its gyms last winter. A third gym was also demolished and rebuilt due to safety concerns.

MSU took the opportunity to craft a new front entrance to the campus fitness facility, as well as implementing updates to the locker rooms and installing new card readers. “It’s been five months of an incredible amount of work,” MSU News Service director Michael Becker told kpax.com.

Work still continues on the former “upper gym,” with the new addition of a climbing wall. The pool room is also closed for the foreseeable future, as the stability of the roof is still being evaluated.

“When we looked at that roof, we saw that it was of a similar design and a similar vintage to the roofs from the gyms that we had to take down and that nature took down for us,” Becker said. “What we are doing is evaluating that roof. We’ve got specialists in there ... evaluating how it’s doing and what repairs are going to be needed to make sure that it is safe for the future.”

MSU plans to erect a series of temporary inflatable gym structures to be opened in October of this year. The fitness center, which is currently being pumped of rain water, is expected to open in a few weeks.
