The LSU Health Fitness & Wellness Center opened Friday in Algiers. It's LSU Health's first expansion into the New Orleans neighborhood on the West Bank, a news release said.

The 45,000-square-foot center was originally built as a Navy Fitness Center. It has been transformed over three phases, beginning in May 2011 when Woodward Design+Build renovated the existing facility into a fitness center.

The next two phases added a pool designed and built by Rotolo Consultants. CDW Services added a caf and physical therapy amenities.

The $6.7 million project was funded by the state and the Algiers Development District.

Tours of the facility are scheduled Friday with Gov. John Bel Edwards, ADD Chair and state Sen. Troy Carter and other officials on hand at the grand opening.
