WIAA Rescinds Shot Clock Decision

STEVENS POINT — The WIAA Board of Control voted, 7-3, Friday to rescind the vote it made in June to implement a 35-second shot clock for boys and girls basketball. At that time the measure, which would have taken effect for the 2019-'20 season, was passed by a 6-4 vote.

Wisconsin would have joined Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Washington, New York, California, North Dakota and South Dakota as states that use a shot clock.

The issue created a tricky situation for the board. Would rescinding the vote set a precedent the next time the board makes an unpopular decision? Should it listen to coach and players, who voiced more support for the shot clock, or athletic directors and administrators, who were staunchly against it?

Cost and implementation were key factors that went into the board's decision to change its mind. The group has received plenty of feedback on the decision since June, mostly negative.
