Catalyst Fitness expects to spend up to $3.5 million to transform the former Dick's Sporting Goods store in Amherst into its newest gym.

That's on top of the $3.4 million the company paid for the nearly 56,000-square-foot building at 281 Meyer Road on Thursday, public records show. Catalyst's purchase comes 3½ months after the lender took over the property following a foreclosure auction. Owners Joe and Amy Bueme previously held the area's Gold's Gym franchise. They started Catalyst in 2012.

The Buemes will make a top-to-bottom renovation, including installing all-new flooring and lighting. The work should take six to eight weeks and they'll start selling memberships two months before the opening.
