The 2017 IDEA World Fitness & Nutrition Expo was held July 20 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where 14,000 fitness professionals and enthusiasts gathered to soak in the latest trends — from workout gear and diet supplements to in-gym data tracking technology.

Inside the front entrance, Aktiv displayed a larger-than-life adult jungle gym, complete with monkey bars and aerial silks. Founder and CEO Bryan Green told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that people “want to have fun, as opposed to that sort of old notion of ‘No pain, no gain.’ ”

According to Green, allusions to pop culture are making their way into the fitness environment by way of fitness challenges such as American Ninja Warrior. People are attracted to the social aspect of the programming — says Green, “They want to train in a social fitness sort of way.”

Capitalizing on that sentiment, group exercise was a spotlight feature at the expo, with demonstrations given for RealRider tilting stationary bikes — designed to mimic the feel of road cycling — and other innovative products tailored for group training.

In the realm of gym tech, body composition measuring devices stole the focus, with a display of a new gym scale by InBalance that breaks it down by weight, fat, muscle mass, BMI and body-water composition and a 3-D body scanner by Styku.

Other notable products included insulated Takeya water bottles, the form-fitting foam roller IntelliRoll, athletic shoes/bosu balls from Primfit, Gripbells with adjustable weight and grip, high-protein Cheese Cremes from Yooli’s Farmer, and vegan, gluten-free, organic supplement powders from BN Labs.
