The Alabama High School Athletic Association will hold its first girlsā flag football season this fall.
The association announced Tuesday that the inaugural girlsā flag football season, which will conclude with a December championship game in Birmingham, is being launched in partnership with the Atlanta Falcons and NFL FLAG, while NIKE will provide apparel.
āAfter discussions with the Atlanta Falcons for several months, we are excited to be adding this girlsā sport for our membership. We think it will grow rapidly,ā AHSAA associate executive director Alvin Briggs said.
The Georgia High School Association made a similar announcement in December 2019, partnering with the Falcons to sanction girlsā flag football. Georgia, Alaska, Nevada and Florida were the four states to have sanctioned girlsā flag football in 2020.
āWe are thrilled to see girlsā flag football continue to expand outside of Georgia. The goal has always been to grow the game,ā Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay said. āThe need and desire for more girlsā programming is there, and we are really excited the Alabama High School Athletic Association has agreed to add the sport and can now give young women more opportunities to play sports in high school. We look forward to seeing how far and wide we can expand the game of girlsā flag football together.ā
