Given the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey along the gulf coast of Texas and well inland, the cancellation of a high school football game seems trivial. Even as sporting events at all levels are threatened by flooding in the storm's aftermath, Friday's much-anticipated game between No. 7 Westlake and No. 2 Katy was cancelled early and is not expected to be made up. It was to be a rematch of two state-title contenders — Westlake defeated defending champion Katy last season in Austin — but it was also the scheduled debut of Katy ISD's Legacy Stadium, which at a cost of $70.3 million is the most expensive high school football facility in the country.
Westlake has already scheduled a new season-opening opponent, with the Chaparrals traveling to College Station for a game Saturday afternoon, according to Austin NBC affiliate KXAN.
The Katy stadium's grand opening is not the only school function on hold, however. According to the Houston Chronicle, the entire first week of classes at Katy ISD has been postponed.
