Rule-Breaking HS Pleads Case to Conference ADs

Bellevue (Wash.) High School made headlines earlier this year after an outside investigation revealed widespread problems within its football program, ranging from boosters providing subsidized tuition at an alternative school and players using fake addresses for eligibility.

Monday, Bellevue School District completed its own internal review of the program and presented the findings to a meeting of athletic directors within the team’s conference, the KingCo Conference.

George Crowder, the conference president, told the Seattle Times that the ADs who heard Bellevue’s account will be reviewing the details in the coming days. Crowder said that they hope to have a recommendation on penalties by the end of the school year, which comes in the middle of June.

Bellevue officials reportedly did not disclose their determinations, and Crowder declined to discuss which penalties the district proposed.

Once the KingCo panel reaches a decision, the ruling can be appealed at various levels, including taking the case to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) executive board.

A range of sanctions are on the table for Bellevue; including everything from a mea culpa letter to expulsion from the WIAA.

Members of the Bellevue School District board signaled that they favor significant sanctions for any wrongdoing.

For its part, the booster club has disputed many of the violations.
