BHITS Therapeutic Sciences to Open a Stem Cell Clinic in Houston: CTE and Stroke

Source: BHITS

BHITS Therapeutic Sciences (BHITS) is pioneering ethical, effective, safe and affordable stem cell therapies using mesenchymal stem cells from human umbilical cord blood. A global leader in regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies, BHITS announced it will open a stem cell clinic in the U.S., bringing its advanced technologies to patients in Houston and allowing patients to access clinical trials. This is the result of Texas House Bill (HB 810) on stem cell therapy, which passed in the Texas state legislature and became law, allowing patients suffering from debilitating and incurable diseases to access innovative stem cell therapies and expanded clinical trials.

BHITS was founded by Brian Mehling, MD, an orthopedic trauma and sports medicine surgeon and leader in stem cell research.

While BHITS will begin clinical trials on a multitude of  different conditions, the medical and scientific team believes one of the most promising is treatment of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This traumatic brain injury  and  condition was exemplified by the movie Concussion with Will Smith. More than 80 NFL players have committed suicide due to this tragic condition.

"CTE is a progressive degenerative disease, which afflicts the brain of people who have suffered repeated concussions and traumatic brain injuries, such as athletes who take part in contact sports. BHITS hopes to work hand-in-hand with organizations like the NFL to help raise awareness on CTE and the importance of understanding how to treat this devastating disease," said Dr. Mehling.

Retired NFL player Kirk Barton recently received treatment at Dr. Mehling's facility in Jamaica. He was a member of the San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins, and started his successful football career playing for Ohio State. Mr. Barton has reported excellent results including complete pain relief.

The medical and scientific team at BHITS thinks stem cell therapies can play an important role in how the disease is treated and managed and possibly prevent CTE in the future.

BHITS also plans to roll out IRB and eventual FDA approved protocols for stroke treatment. There are 800,000 strokes yearly, killing 120,000 people in the U.S alone.

Patient Testimonials

Yesenia Torres – Paralyzed Patient Regained Levels of Mobility

Yesenia was an outgoing, athletic popular teenager until a car accident caused a suitcase to hit her in the neck, dislocating a vertebrae, paralyzing her from the chest down.

Treatment: Yesenia traveled to China and to receive stem cell treatments with the help of BHI.

Recovery: "It was like a dream come true, I was so happy, I couldn't believe it. Everything went so well.  Just six hours after the treatment, my body was able to do things that were not possible after the accident. Movements started to come back and now I have an increased mobility. I regained sensation in my arms and other parts of my body," Ms. Torres said.

Brothers Martin and Damian Triscova Wilson’s Disease

Martin was once an athlete who played soccer, was an avid bicyclist, and roller bladder, until he could barely tie his own shoes and needed help eating. Damian dreamt of being a dentist and put all of his energy into his studies. In high school, he was an excelling student, but later had to put his college studies on hold due to a debilitating illness.

The brothers, 27 and 22, were diagnosed at a late age with the same genetic disorder, Wilson's disease, a rare, inherited disorder that causes too much copper to accumulate in the liver, brain, and other vital organs. Both suffered from declining health and required around the clock care.

Treatment
: After learning about BHI’s therapies, they traveled to China and received treatment at BHI’s facility in Wuhan. Upon their return to Slovakia, both of them, as well as their family members and friends, noticed dramatic improvement in their conditions.

Recovery: Mrs. Triscova, the mother, said: “Damian could hardly speak and it was extremely difficult to communicate with him, his driver’s license was revoked and he had to put his college studies on hold. After the treatment, he is a new person – he even got his driver’s license back. Martin was not able to eat or shave by himself before, and now all these tasks are possible for him to perform daily. His overall energy levels are up, and he has found a joy in life again. He is hoping to get back to work soon.”

Greg Mucci – Debilitating Injury after a Motorcycle Accident

Mucci participated in sports his whole life until a motorcycle accident in 2004. Unfortunately, his injury developed into avascular necrosis and sidelined his hopes for a pro athletic career

Treatment: Dr. Mehling performed four complex, reconstructive surgeries to stave off the need for Mucci to have a hip replacement. However, problems with blood circulation caused him to develop severe joint pain and, eventually, avascular necrosis--which means his leg bone was dying. Pain prevented him from participating in the sports he loved. Dr. Mehling suggested stem cell treatments, Mucci traveled to China to undergo the procedure.

Recovery: Ten years after his treatment, he continues to see the benefits of his stem cell treatments. He says, "I gained 30 pounds of muscle, can now play semi-pro football and get to do most of the things I want to do physically. One hundred percent I want to go back for another stem cell treatment."

Is This Ethical? Yes

BHI does not use fetal or embryonic stem cells, but rather uses only placental cord blood stem cells that are ethically harvested without any injury to the baby or mother. BHI has also become one of the pioneers of the use of stem cells cultured from ethically harvested placental cord material, and from a patients’ own fat or bone marrow.
