[Toronto ON] —Two of Canada’s largest fitness organizations, canfitpro and GoodLife Fitness, reached an agreement with Re:Sound—the Canadian not-for-profit music licensing company dedicated to obtaining fair compensation for music creators—to propose an inaugural music tariff for fitness centres, designed to ensure fairness for both the music and fitness industries. The tariff was certified by the Copyright Board of Canada on March 28th, 2015.

canfitpro and GoodLife Fitness focused their efforts on collaborating with Re:Sound, which represents recording artists, background performers, session musicians and record labels, for their performance rights. The Re:Sound Fitness Tariff, created with Re:Sound and submitted to and certified by the Copyright Board, benefits the entire Canadian fitness and music industries, by ensuring that the fitness industry has access to affordable, enjoyable and diverse music options for members while the music industry is guaranteed fair compensation for their art.

canfitpro, the largest provider of education in the Canadian fitness industry, and GoodLife Fitness, Canada’s largest fitness club chain, devoted substantial financial resources and upwards of 10,000 staff hours over the past eight years to advocate on behalf of the fitness industry for a clear and viable music tariff.

“As two proud Canadian organizations, canfitpro and GoodLife feel it is important to keep our fitness industry thriving and growing while also supporting the incredibly talented musicians and record labels that we have in this country,” says David ‘Patch’ Patchell-Evans, Founder and CEO of GoodLife Fitness. “The fitness industry appreciates the value of music in choreographed classes, as it helps to motivate members so they have an effective and enjoyable workout. That is why we feel there are four equal beneficiaries of this tariff: musicians, record labels, fitness professionals and Canadian fitness members.”

“Re:Sound, canfitpro and GoodLife Fitness collaborated to find rates for the use of music in fitness centres that are reasonable for consumers and fair for artists and record labels,” says Martin Gangnier, Director, Licensing for Re:Sound. “On behalf of music creators across Canada, I’d like to commend canfitpro and GoodLife Fitness on championing music’s value.”

In addition to this recent agreement, GoodLife and canfitpro have also been working with another great organization in the music industry, SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada). This collaboration sought to ensure that the composers of music, the authors and the music publishers also receive fair compensation for the use of music in fitness centres and to encourage the Canadian fitness industry to hold proper licenses with SOCAN.

"canfitpro and GoodLife have been very strong partners for SOCAN—They are leading the way with respect to copyright,” says Craig Brockie, Industry Relations Specialist for SOCAN. “SOCAN recognizes and appreciates canfitpro and GoodLife's efforts in obtaining annual SOCAN licenses. Music has value and it is encouraging to see companies like GoodLife and canfitpro recognizing this."

canfitpro and GoodLife continue to advocate for the fitness industry in a variety of ways, especially in the realm of government relations. Dann Sawa, Government Relations Consultant for canfitpro will be presenting a session at the canfitpro World Fitness Expo on Friday, August 14th from 8:00-9:15 a.m., regarding music tariff(s), government tax efforts, and the importance that being certified as a personal trainer or group fitness instructor has from a liability insurance perspective.
