National Senior Games Voted Best 2013 Multi-Sports Event

LAS VEGAS, NV-The 2013 National Senior Games Presented by Humana has been voted "Best Multi-Sport or Multi-Discipline Event" in a prestigious annual awards poll hosted by SportsTravel magazine. The results were announced November 13 at an awards luncheon during the TEAMS sports industry conference and expo in Las Vegas.

The 16th annual SportsTravel Awards recognize excellence in the organization and management of sporting events at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels. TEAMS, first launched in 1998, annually attracts more than 1,400 attendees including CEOs, executive directors and event managers from sports organizations as well as representatives from sports commissions and convention bureaus, corporate sponsors, event suppliers and other hospitality industry opinion leaders. Online voting was open to membership and the public.

"2013 National Senior Games, Cleveland OH" earned top honors under the Amateur Sporting Event category for multi-sport events in a field of five that included the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The biennial competition for seniors, which featured nearly 11,000 athletes in 21 sports in 2013

"NSGA is both proud and humbled to receive peer recognition from our industry and sports enthusiasts," NSGA CEO Marc T. Riker said. "We are grateful for the positive comments received from conference attendees. NSGA thanks the 2013 Host City Cleveland and all the cities across the country that have hosted local, state, and the National Games. You have helped provide the opportunity for aging adults to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle. The athletes are the ones who we honor on this 'medal podium' today."

Riker credited the local host organization in Cleveland for its role in helping stage the National Senior Games and welcoming its participants. "Our host partners play a key role in securing facilities and services, hosting athlete celebrations and hospitality events, and especially in recruiting and training thousands of volunteers needed to staff over two dozen venues over our two week event," he explained.

The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) is a nonprofit member of the United States Olympic Committee that promotes health and wellness for adults 50 and over through education, fitness and sport. NSGA governs the biennial National Senior Games, the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors.  NSGA sanctions 51 state and affiliate  members across the country that host qualifying Senior Games or Senior Olympics competition.
