Playground safety resources available for professionals, parents and caregivers

Ashburn, Va. (April 23, 2018) ā€” The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is celebrating National Playground Safety Week April 23ā€“27 by providing resources to playground professionals and advocates in every community. It is NRPAā€™s mission to provide education, networking, resources and certification to playground operators to help them monitor and improve the safety of playgrounds. NRPA offers a wide variety of resources to playground professionals and novices alike, such as:

The Daily Dozen Playground Safety Checklist ā€“ Checklist designed for parents and caregivers to help identify safety hazards and ensure children have a safe place to play.

Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Certification Program ā€“ The CPSI Certification program provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date training on playground safety issues, including hazard identification, equipment specifications, surfacing requirements and risk management methods.

Playground Inspection Kits ā€“ Kits include the equipment necessary to check for head and neck entrapment hazards as well as protrusion and entanglement hazards on playgrounds. Developed to meet Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines. Cost is $175 for NRPA members, $227 for non-members.

ā€œNRPA is proud to be a leader in playground safety,ā€ said Karen Snyder, CPSI, NRPA senior manager of certification. ā€œWe look forward to highlighting resources available to playground professionals, parents and caregivers during National Playground Safety Week.ā€

NRPA advises anyone with playground safety concerns to:

  • Determine who owns the playground ā€” you may have to contact a local park and recreation department if you do not know where to start.
  • Contact the owner/operator about the condition of the play area and request follow-up.
