WILMINGTON, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- PhysiMax, the first real-time athletic movement assessment service provider, announces a breakthrough study, validating automated scoring of the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) box-jump protocol.

The collaborative study was conducted by the University of North Carolina (D. Padua, S.W. Marshall), the United States Military Academy at West Point (K.L. Cameron, S.W. Marshall), and the University of Connecticut (L.J. Distefano). Professor Darin Padua, chair of the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of North Carolina, will be presenting the study at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Conference, June 23-26, in St. Louis, Missouri.

The study evaluated dozens of healthy West Point freshmen cadets with no pre-existing injuries or limitations, predicting injury risk and evaluating biomechanical efficiency according to the latest standard Landing Error Scoring System protocol, using a 3D video camera (Kinect).

“The LESS is a common tool used to screen high-performing individuals at risk for lower extremity injury,” professor Padua said. “We've shown that in collaboration with a technology leader like PhysiMax, scoring dynamic functional movement assessment can be automated, providing immediate objective and reliable scores. This opens a new era in athletics, serving public healthcare goals of minimizing non-contact injury and improving performance through proactive measures."

Phase two of the study, currently underway, involves evaluating over 1,000 freshmen using the PhysiMax solution, essentially addressing the issue of drop-out due to injury by identifying high-risk enlistees and implementing proactive sports injury prevention measures through athletic movement assessment.
