Workout selfies on the rise across social media

The Edge Fitness Clubs, with locations in Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, today announced plans to open a first-of-its-kind Gym Selfie Room on April 1. The room, located at the club’s Fairfield, Connecticut, location, will be equipped with lighting, hair products, fitness accessories and more to ensure club members using the room will capture the perfect photo for sharing on their social media channels. It will remain open for the entire month of April as The Edge pilots the Gym Selfie Room program and explores its potential for expansion to other locations as the club continues to open more fitness centers throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Across its 17 clubs, The Edge has seen a growing number of its members taking photos of themselves during or after their workouts, most often strategically poised – and posed – in front of a mirror to showcase the benefits of their workouts. In a recent survey commissioned by The Edge and conducted online by The Harris Poll*among over 1,500 U.S. adults who have gone to a gym or fitness studio, 43% have taken a picture or video of themselves while there, with 27% having taken a selfie. With this overwhelmingly positive data, The Edge jumped on the opportunity to continue serving its mission of offering members the most innovative fitness experience.

“The Edge Fitness Clubs continues to be a leader in fitness trends and experiences,” said Vice President of Marketing and Customer Experience Gillian Plummer. “Our first location in the Hartford, Conn., area, which opened thirty years ago, offered group exercise classes before they were a staple in other gyms. Now we’re raising the bar again by offering this state-of-the-art selfie room that gives our members a premium, private area to show how their hard work has paid off.”

The Edge will be sharing photos of the Gym Selfie Room as a sneak peek for its social media followers all week leading up to the April 1 launch. Some lucky members have already had the chance to try it out.

Former “Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise” contestant and long-time Edge Fitness Clubs member Matt Munson, ambassador for The Edge, was recently given a sneak peek of the Gym Selfie Room.

“I've never been big on selfies but after taking a peek at the Gym Selfie Room, The Edge has once again found a new way to make fitness fun,” said Munson, ambassador for The Edge. “It's a cool idea and so useful for members looking to track their progress.”

As part of the Gym Selfie Room launch, The Edge Fitness Clubs is hosting a contest which will award ten lucky winners a one-month VIP Membership that includes exclusive access to this selfie room.
