An athletic director in Kerrville, Texas, is facing multiple accusations of inappropriately touching students.
The San Antonio Express-News reported that Damian Patrick Van Winkle was arrested Thursday on suspicion of indecent contact with a child. He has been an educator for 20 years and with the Center Point Independent School District for nine months.
Van Winkle, of Center Point, is charged with one count of indecency with a child by contact, a second-degree felony, KSAT-TV reported.
According to reports, multiple students have alleged that Van Winkle inappropriately touched them during the school year. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said in a statement that the alleged violations of trust by a senior school official are “deeply concerning.”
On April 20, the state Child Protective Services Division notified the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office about a referral for an investigation into allegations against Van Winkle after multiple students reported inappropriate contact by a member of the district’s athletic staff.
According to the Express-News, the students told police that Van Winkle had close contact with several students during the school year, including contact that was "described as uncomfortable and/or sexual in nature," the sheriff’s office said.
At least one victim was under 17, the newspaper reported.
At the time of his arrest, Van Winkle was on paid leave pending the outcomes of the CPS and sheriff’s office investigations.
