The coach of the Patrick Henry Community College men's basketball team died late Wednesday from injuries sustained when he tried to escape from a crashed SUV.

Kenny Wade, 45, was traveling on Briarpatch Lane in Franklin County around 11:20 p.m. when his 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe had a mechanical failure, according to a Virginia State Police news release. The sport utility vehicle ran off the right side of the road and overturned, the release said.

Wade was trying to climb out of the SUV after the crash when it shifted and trapped him, according to police. He died at the scene.

Wade had led the Martinsville community college's basketball team since 2009 and recently had been promoted to assistant athletic director.

"Kenny Wade was one of the most outstanding individuals that ever walked the sidelines," said Chris Parker, the former PHCC athletic director. "He was there with me from day one, and experienced it all firsthand. He was not only a great colleague and friend, but he was like a brother to me."

Wade also served as the director of facilities and transportation at PHCC.

In high school, Wade was a member of Franklin County's 1989-90 basketball team that reached the quarter finals of the Group AAA state tournament. He played in college at Mount Aloysius (Pa.), which competed at the JUCO level in the early 1990s.

The Martinsville Bulletin contributed to this report.
