Letter from the Editor: Perspective is Everything

I think most people realize the importance of their health, but for those working in the athletics, fitness and recreation industries who have made it their life's work to help others maintain and improve their overall wellbeing, the current public health crisis around COVID-19 hits close to home. It's difficult to watch our spring industry events and conferences, as well as college and high school tournaments, contend with a public health crisis that's really beyond anyone's control. While disagreements have arisen around what's alarmist and what's practical in this situation, all I've seen from the people in this industry is an aim to ensure they're doing what's best for the health of fans, attendees, student-athletes and the general public.

Our April issue is heavy on health and wellbeing, with features that tackle issues such as the benefits of outdoor fitness (page 42), student-athlete nutrition (52), accessibility to water for those with disabilities (58), and the importance of fostering a sense of belonging in college recreation (26). In uncertain times, it's comforting to know that the professionals we talked to for these stories are out there continuing their day-to-day business of helping people stay happy and healthy.

After of month of passing a flu/cold around our house, my family has emerged with a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasure of breathing through our noses and not having to walk around the house with a box a Kleenex in tow. In talking with a colleague after returning to the office, we both agreed that there is wisdom behind that old axiom that suggests your health is everything. You can scrounge by when you're short on cash, and we can usually survive the loss of a friendship, but when you're not feeling well — when your own body is betraying you — all other concerns fall to the wayside.

Perspective is everything — and keeping it during difficult times is fundamental. As the world sorts out the current crisis, we hope you'll keep a level head and know that you are valued for what you do to help keep your communities feeling their best. There will always be bumps along the road, but our industries will endure because our product — health — is indispensable.
