Fresno State’s Student Recreation Center is the second phase of a new campus activity center development. The facility complements the adjacent Save Mart Center, which is also designed in the stucco, Spanish Missioninfluenced architectural vernacular exhibited in the original buildings of the Fresno State campus.
The recreation center is light and open, thanks in part to a 16,000-squarefoot central atrium. The atrium features a white exposed structure, soars to a height of 55 feet and is surrounded on the upper level by clerestory windows and a cardio mezzanine.
On the lower level, patrons have access to a fitness center that is oriented toward a four-sided, 18-screen entertainment- system kiosk. This level also includes two racquetball courts, an aerobics/ dance studio, a dividable four-court gymnasium, shower and locker rooms, and multipurpose/meeting rooms. The upper level features a 1⁄8-mile, threelane indoor track that surrounds the gymnasium below, the cardio mezzanine and administrative and staff offices.
The rec center is also home to the 8,400-square-foot Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center — a state-of-the-art, 300-seat multipurpose auditorium used to accommodate public programs, speakers, workshops and conferences, as well as Fresno State classes. The elegant Peters Center is bedecked with perforated maple wall panels, a tiered ceiling with recessed lighting and padded seating.
Outside the rec center is an expansive courtyard and terrace. Here, grassy lawns play host to social activities of groups and individuals seeking to enjoy central California’s mild weather.
