The Bill R. Foster and Family Recreation Center is a unique building, drawing people into the facility but also enabling them to experience the activity without entering. The building not only revitalizes and expands recreation programming, it strengthens the campus culture and it introduces new basketball courts, a multiuse activity court, indoor fitness areas, a pool, a wellness suite, an outdoor bouldering area, administration offices and other key amenities.
The defining feature of the center is its campus pass, which cuts through the building. It is along the promenade that cuts open the building’s volume where the crystalline, colorful interior and its recreational activities are on display for passersby. Limestone gives way to cool silver metal and glass, some of which takes on the maroon hue of the university’s colors. Two massive trusses span the pathway overhead, supporting the jogging track at the upper level, but also giving the walk its unique winding, open, columnless character.
The diagonal orientation of the campus path points at one end toward the student union, and the campus arena and arts center at the other. This new path connects three major activities of student life: social gathering, recreation and wellness, and athletic and fine arts performance.
