The Outdoor Adventures Center is Nebraska’s on-campus home for adventure trips, academic and non-credit classes, challenge course programming, outdoor gear rentals and the campus bike shop. Other features include staff workspace, three locker rooms, a classroom and the climbing center.
Perhaps the most noticeable feature of the facility is its external climbing wall. In the first three months of operation, the climbing wall increased participation at the OAC by more than 250 percent. The use of brick and stone help to define the facility’s programming purpose, while exterior glass, metal and wall panelling creates cohesiveness to other campus buildings.
The intentional use of exposed concrete flooring, steel structure, ductwork and piping contributes to the building’s rugged feel. Finish materials rely on particle board, bold metal corner guards and metal wall base. Â
In addition to being located near other campus recreation facilities, including the City Campus Recreation Center, Mabel Lee Hall Pool, Mabel Lee Hall Field Complex, and outside volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts, the facility promotes the Bike University of Nebraska initiative by acting as a hub for the university’s bike culture.
