TDECU Stadium – University of Houston

Houston, TX
Construction Cost: $102 million
Area / Square Feet: 214,700
Occupancy Date: August 2014

The new, 40,000-seat TDECU Stadium replaces its crumbling 1942 predecessor. The new stadium, situated on the same site as the old one, was reoriented to better blend the facility with existing campus structures.

On the inside, the field is sunk 25 feet below the concourse β€” slightly above street level β€” to maximize the seating capacity of the lower bowl. The stadium offers great views from every seat, as well as from most of the concourse. Inside the base of the stadium, student-athletes enjoy state-of-the-art locker facilities. The Bert F. Winston Band and Performance Center is located on the east side of the stadium nearest to the academic campus, and the adjoining Sanders Red & White Hall is a multipurpose reception and exhibition area located beside the easily identified central ticketing office clad in red glass.

At the exterior base, a series of rectilinear forms house support functions. The back of the upper decks are wrapped in the β€œCougar Cage,” a permeable, patterned enclosure that provides a unique identity. This distinctive facade, created with perforated aluminum metal panels that vary in size and color, uses thematic red elements to convey movement as well as clear wayfinding cues to direct fans to stadium entrances.
