Prairie View A&M University Student Recreation Center

Prairie View, TX
Construction Cost: $24 million
Area / Square Feet: 92,000

The Prairie View A&M Student Recreation Center is designed to be sustainable, active and connected. It’s a gateway for campus activity where students, student-athletes and faculty can interact.

The active fitness spaces are visible as one approaches the building’s north side. This placement utilizes double-height glass without solar heat gain impacting building performance. As the building facade moves west, strategically placed deep windows with sunshades prevent solar heat gain while allowing views. The main point of entry is adjacent to the faculty offices and provides direct views of the pool, fitness space, gyms, basketball arena and student café, as well as out to the campus lawn.

The building directly connects to Billy Nicks Field House, and its central spine allows connection from the new main entry to the lockers, practice gyms and basketball arena. The existing pool was renovated with expanded deck space and an adjoining patio with second-floor balcony to enliven the pregame experience and engage the adjacent athletics campus. Students are able to gather outdoors, watch movies, play music and enjoy gameday pool access adjacent to the football stadium.
