Hess Athletic Center

Hill Air Force Base, UT
Construction Cost: $10 million
Area / Square Feet: 73,980
Occupancy Date: November 2006

Functionally, the Hess Athletic Center at Hill Air Force Base provides recreation and exercise spaces that meet the USAF design requirements for fitness facilities. In addition to providing healthy recreation, the center is used to train professional soldiers for the rigor of active duty. The challenge in this project was to not only meet the pragmatic requirements, but to exceed USAF expectations by providing a stimulating and open facility.

Extensive exterior glazing reflects the sky, a fitting look for the center, which contains areas for aerobics and free-weight and resistance exercise, as well as a gymnasium with two basketball/volleyball courts and spectator seating, a climbing wall and a running track. Additional amenities include classrooms and a health and wellness center with offices. All activity areas are designed around a two-story central lobby and circulation space that provides views and continuity between all destination points.
