University of Nebraska-Lincoln, East Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Renovation and Addition

The East Campus Recreation and Wellness Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a sensitive blend of old and new. The adaptive reuse of what was formerly the East Campus Activities Center — a 1926 campus icon that previous studies had recommended tearing down — honors the history of the building while providing a modern recreation center for the campus. 

The project involved a renovation and reordering of spaces within the existing interior and the addition of building volumes on the west, east and south facades. These volumes house fitness programs, including a cardio loft, weight training areas and group fitness studios. Special care was taken to preserve and accentuate the building’s historic character, particularly a series of tall arched windows. This was accomplished by wrapping the original brick and stone exterior in a “jewel box” that showcases both the refurbished arches and the activity spaces inside. A running track highlights the juxtaposition of old and new by winding around the existing gymnasium, through the glass addition and back into the old building, offering users an up-close view of the arches’ brick detailing.

The designers rejuvenated and modernized the interior with an open layout that encourages interaction by increasing visibility and connectivity between programs and the two multipurpose gymnasiums. Locker rooms, offices and a gymnasium within the existing building were carefully renovated to maintain the historic charm of the original space.
