Legends Community Centre

Oshawa, ON
Construction Cost: $33 million (Canadian)
Area / Square Feet: 220,000
Occupancy Date: September 2006

Providing much-needed recreation services for the fast-growing neighborhoods in North Oshawa, Ontario, the Legends Community Centre features intimately scaled program elements that are designed to create a visual connection with exterior streams and ravines. The panel noted the way the building?s massing balances the robust scale required to provide a civic presence and the more intimate scale required to connect to the surrounding landscape. In the words of one judge, "By the softening of roof forms and changes in materials, the building rests and interacts with its surroundings."

Inside, the various programmatic components are located around a doubleheight interior circulation spine that is enhanced by the use of courtyards, light wells, vibrant colors and wood glulam to draw patrons through the space in a dynamic fashion. Of particular note, the sculptural form of the pool and fitness volume, with its large expanses of glazing, adds drama to the building approach and allows views from the street into these areas of high activity.

Judge's Comments

A great effort to balance the intimate scale of a friendly community center with the massive volumes of a large recreation facility.
— James Meyer

The abundance of natural light in this facility is outstanding, and the opportunity to swim practically outdoors in such a cold climate is compelling.
— Erik Kocher

Very logical plan for such a large facility. The swim center at the entry greets visitors with a great view of the pool, and the use of deep-cell sun shades protects the space from overheating.
