Michael G. Morrison, S.J. Stadium Creighton University

Omaha, NE 2006

Project Description

Creighton University is not only home to one of the nation’s top collegiate soccer programs, it also now boasts its own world-class soccer-exclusive stadium. Athletic department officials made the bold decision to use synthetic turf, considered taboo by many in the soccer world. But the rubber-based turf gives the field an evergreen look that complements the friendly environs of the Michael G. Morrison, S.J. Stadium.

The facility’s steep seating design creates an intimate feeling for spectators and forces opposing teams to face an intimidating wall of fans. Fixed seating for 2,200 spectators, covered by a protective steel canopy, adds visual impact — as do 15 suites located above the stands. A tiered seating area made of the same turf that covers the field accommodates an additional 1,800 fans.

Exposed structural steel played a key role in the stadium’s fast-track design. Precast plank, in conjunction with 700 tons of structural steel framing, was used as the primary elevated floor system. Both materials allowed for faster construction through the winter months.
