Area / Square Feet: 210,000

Georgia Southern University’s original 90,000-square foot, two-story, brick-clad Recreation Activity Center now sports an addition that includes a 20,000-square-foot fitness center, a two-court gymnasium and two separate multipurpose activity courts. Meanwhile, a new aquatics center includes an indoor lap pool, an outdoor leisure pool, a wet classroom, and a whirlpool and sauna each capable of seating as many as 30 people. Other new amenities include offices, seminar space and locker rooms. Among the outdoor additions are multipurpose fields for club sports, sand volleyball courts, hiking trails and increased parking. An outdoor amphitheater features a band shell for concerts and other events.

The exterior of the facility is clad in masonry that complements existing campus facilities, and sloped metal roofs cover the major spaces. A two-and-a-half-story tower defines the main entrance, and the combination of natural finishes, a neutral color palette, live plants mixed with faux trees, and large windows and skylights provide a fresh appearance designed to motivate students toward a healthy lifestyle.
