Longwood University Recreation Center

Farmville, VA
Construction Cost: $11.1 million
Area / Square Feet: 72,400
Occupancy Date: September 2007

Nestled into the side of an existing hill, the recreation center at Longwood University is highlighted by a three-level glass feature through which the fitness center, climbing wall and indoor track can be seen. The facility’s design is a modern interpretation of the historic buildings on campus.

Other components include a two-court gymnasium, a multipurpose activity court, two racquetball courts, three multipurpose rooms for group exercise, a group cycling studio and separate locker rooms for students and staff. A juice bar and student lounge are located off the lobby.

The university’s Center for Student Health, Wellness and Counseling has its own upper-level entry, separated from the main entrance on the lower level to ensure student privacy, and a secluded Therapy Garden is located nearby.

The facility is LEED-certified Gold and saves $60,000 a year in energy expenses. More than 98 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills, and recycled building materials were used when possible. Mechanical equipment is wrapped for energy efficiency, and water efficiency efforts include waterless urinals and low-water showerheads.
