Pete Hanna Center - Samford University

Birmingham, AL
Construction Cost: $26.4 million
Area / Square Feet: 147,000
Occupancy Date: October 2007

Designed to serve the school’s approximately 4,500 students, faculty and staff, as well as support many of the university’s athletics programs and provide a venue for special events, the three-level Pete Hanna Center blends seamlessly with the Georgian-style architecture of the campus.

Since a good portion of the bottom two levels was strategically built into a 40-foot hillside on a rocky site, the view from the campus side appears to show a one-story facility. But the view from behind the center — where other athletic grounds and facilities are located — is that of a more imposing structure. Limestone columns and custom trim are featured throughout the exterior.

The building’s interior is unified by the strategic use of the Bulldogs logo and a blue, red and white color scheme. Identical lobbies are placed on either side of the competition gymnasium, which can be clearly viewed from many of the rooms within the building, including the 5,000-square-foot cardiovascular fitness center and adjacent weight-training room.

Bulldogs athletes benefit from multiple team-dedicated locker rooms and restrooms, extensive training suites and private areas for study.
