Port Moody Recreation Centre Renovation and Expansion

Construction Cost: $23.6 million
Area / Square Feet: 164,000
Occupancy Date: April 2008

The new Port Moody Recreation Centre provides a major athletic and recreation destination for the city and surrounding area. The new additions tie together three existing components (an ice arena, curling rink and social recreation center) in a combined athletic complex. New programming components include a double gymnasium, a running track, multipurpose spaces, tennis courts, a synthetic turf playing field, a field house, a fitness facility complete with a group exercise room, and changing rooms with associated spa facilities. A new international-size ice rink with second-level bleacher seating will serve as a training facility for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Guiding all interior design decisions was a desire to provide as much visibility between the activities as possible. The spaces are not designed as individual rooms, but rather as one large activity space defined by the continuous wooden ceiling plane and walls. The interior material palette is simple and elegant, comprised mainly of natural wood, brightly colored concrete, specialized athletic flooring and glass.

The use of planted roofs over main-level spaces brings the natural landscape context onto and over the new building. The edge detail of these planted roofs feature sloping berms to permit the plants to be seen from ground level, further emphasizing the wooden ceiling/soffit.
