Middletown High School

Middletown, N.Y.
Construction Cost: $11 million
Occupancy Date: September 2008

The Enlarged City School District of Middletown had been plagued over the past several years by low graduation rates, minimal student-athlete participation and high absentee rates. It was nearly put on the state’s watch list for poor-performing schools. District leadership envisioned an athletic facility that would make a lasting difference for the high school, its students and the surrounding community.

Faller Field began with the installation of a fully poured all-weather track, equipped with an embedded timing system that instantly displays results on the new high-definition video scoreboard. Synthetic turf was chosen for maintenance and operations savings over an extended period of time while allowing substantially increased facility use. After testing was performed, the main turf field became one of only seven in the United States to receive the 1 Star FIFA-certified rating. (Of the other six, five are at universities, and one is at a professional soccer stadium.)

Surrounding features include a freestanding concessions stand, enclosed bleacher seating for 3,500 spectators, a field house with locker rooms and a press box with a video deck that serves fields on each side of the complex. An entryway was included to engage the surrounding neighborhood and create a statement to visitors.
