Mustang Stadium Stevenson University

Owings Mills, Md. 2012

Project Description

Stevenson University preserved the professional quality of the former Baltimore Colts/Ravens practice facility when transforming it into Mustang Stadium, which serves as the gateway to its campus along Owings Mills Boulevard. Situated to provide a scenic view of the adjacent wetlands, the athletic facility is built into a tight hillside between the former Ravens practice field and an existing parking lot. The campus, perched atop nearby hills, overlooks the stadium and athletic fields.

The lower level is an office suite overlooking the field and provides space for a future Hall of Fame. The President’s Suite is a center of activity throughout the week. The top floor consists of abundant media and coaches’ boxes, and a warming kitchen serves the press and President’s Suite.

The facility’s aesthetic, blending modern forms with more traditional scale and materials, complements the adjacent campus buildings, but at the same time acts as an architectural billboard announcing the entrance to the campus.

Due to the complex interior-exterior relationships throughout the building, several types of insulation and other building-envelope elements were selected to yield a highly efficient structure. Concerns about the west-facing glass facade were mitigated with glazing that meets strict solar heat gain requirements. As night falls and the dark glass fades, the stadium becomes a display of activity, providing a view into its most active and prominent spaces.
