The University of South Dakota wanted a Wellness Center that represented its commitment to quality of life throughout the campus community. As such, the building evokes a sense of student-centered ambience not found in an academic hall and intentionally reflects its own identity.
The heart of the USD campus utilizes a Richardson Romanesque architectural style in which the common masonry units are pink-hued quartzite granite. The facility’s interior design emulates many of the exterior materials by featuring quartzite, polished concrete floors, exposed steel and ductwork, as well as punches of USD red.
The natural quartzite stone is a key material used throughout this project on both the exterior and interior, highlighted by the polished concrete aggregate, divider walls at the climbing wall, stair treads, architectural facade and site benches.
Not only has this facility become a strong icon for student quality of life, but it is an amenity for the surrounding community. The wellness center remains active during the summer months with special events and recreational camps, and plans are already in the works for expansion and the addition of a natatorium.
