Just in time for the new year, employees and residents of Town Center will have a new gym option: the YMCA.

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is taking over the former Town Center Fitness location above Paper Source and Zushi on Town Center Drive.

Like other YMCA locations, the one at Town Center will have cardio and weight-training equipment; personal training programs and group exercise classes. It will open Jan. 1.

Members of the YMCA at Town Center also will have access to new high-intensity workout classes with real-time performance screens, according to a release from Divaris Real Estate, the company that leases out space in Town Center.

The classes are meant to attract people who might not consider the YMCA as their first fitness choice, the release said.

Town Center residents and people who work in the district are eligible for membership specials, including a discounted monthly rate and no joining fee. Another perk? They can work out at any YMCA location.

Town Center Fitness closed last year after 12 years of being in business so the owner could focus on his son's health needs.

It was the only gym in Town Center, and residents and businesses were looking for a replacement, said Michael Divaris, president of Town Center's leasing company.

The YMCA of South Hampton Roads will hold several pop-up registration events in Town Center so residents and employees of the area can receive a discounted membership rate.

Potential members can also call 275-9450.

Those interested should bring their Town Center Rewards Card, resident or employee verification information to the following events:
