Towson University Opens Rec Center with Unique Feature

Towson University will celebrate the grand opening of the newly expanded Burdick Hall Wednesday afternoon.

The project looks to capitalize on a recent trend in sports and recreation: obstacle course racing.

Inspired by the popularity of the TV program American Ninja Warrior and events like Spartan Race and Tough Mudder, some gyms have dedicated themselves entirely to the concept. Standalone facilities that offer Ninja Warrior-style courses have begun to attract not only those looking to train for a particular event, but youths looking for an alternative to traditional sports are joining in, as well.

Burdick Hall will become one of the first collegiate recreation buildings to embrace the trend, with a course they’ve dubbed “The Jungle.”

The expansion project adds 94,000 square feet to the facility, and includes multipurpose athletic courts, new fitness space, an inclined running track, group exercise rooms, a spin studio and new office space, according to architect HOK.
