Student Bomb Threat Shuts Down Campus Rec Center

Students at Washington State University are shaken up after another student entered the University Recreation building on Saturday morning and threatened to detonate a bomb.

Police showed up at the recreation center soon after student Dmitry Dementyev made the threats and took him into custody.

WSU Police Lt. Michael Larsen said Dementyev “confronted two females and said something to the effect of ‘This is for all of you. All of us are going to die. WSU students are going to die.’”

According to Brenna Kelly, a WSU student, “No one knew what was going on. I got downstairs, I saw someone running through the lobby. He was about six feet tall and had his phone out, music playing and was shouting things at people.”

The recreation center remained closed for about an hour after the incident as investigators searching the building for anything dangerous. They did not find evidence of a bomb or any other kind of weapon.

Police said they have had contact with Dementyev recently when they were asked to perform a welfare check on him, but everything was fine said Lt. Larsen.

Dementyev will undergo a mental health evaluation and could potentially be charged with felony harassment.
