The NFL is asking a federal judge to appoint a special investigator to look into fraudulent claims in the $1 billion concussion settlement it has reached with former players.
According to Fox Sports, the league cited an independent study which concluded that over 400 attorneys, doctors and former players have made fraudulent claims with the NFL.
Meanwhile, plaintiffs’ lawyers are alleging that the league is not awarding settlement funds fast enough, as only $227 million in claims have been awarded. The league is blaming the fraudulent claims for the delay and asking that any appointed investigator be granted the power to subpoena those thought to have submitted false claims.
The NFL says a special investigator would help ensure the integrity of the settlement and arguments are scheduled to be heard Wednesday by a Philadelphia judge.
Not everyone is happy with the league's settlement of the class action lawsuit aimed at compensating those players who have suffered concussions and long-term brain damage. Some players objected to the settlement, saying that members of the class who suffered from CTE are being singled out from those who suffered other brain conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
