SANFORD, Maine — Police say a man has died after a hit-and-run at a Sanford baseball game Friday evening.

Police identified the victim as Douglas Parkhurst, 68, from West Newfield.

The driver, Carol Sharrow, 51, of Sanford, has been charged with manslaughter.

The hit-and-run took place just after 7 p.m. at Goodall Park in downtown Sanford. Emergency responders received a call that a woman was driving a car on the field during a baseball game. The driver came into the park by the main gate and drove onto the field, according to a media release issued Saturday morning by the Sanford Police Department.

Bystanders and ballplayers scattered to avoid the vehicle as it drove erratically on the ballfield, police said. The car then struck a closed gate and sped toward the open main gate. The driver struck Parkhurst, who was near the main gate, and then raced away from the park. He died while enroute to the hospital, according to police reports.

Police and fire personnel responded immediately to investigate the incident and search for the driver. Police found and arrested Sharrow, who was taken to York County Jail. The case remains open and under investigation by state and local law enforcement agencies. The Sanford Police Department asks anyone who has video of the events on the ball field to call them at 324-9170, extension 1.

A video taken by a witness from inside the ballpark shows a car driving onto the field as a children's baseball game was going on, according to an earlier report from WGME. Kids were on the field, and police say 200-300 people were in the stands.
