CLEMSON - Clemson's newest sport and stadium moved one step closer to reality Friday.

The athletic department received Phase I approval for the construction of a new softball stadium from the university's board of trustees, allowing the athletic department to select an architect and begin the design process, according to a press release from the school.

The softball program is on track to begin competition in academic year 2019-20. The school is currently searching for a head coach, while coaches' offices, player facilities and the new stadium construction are in process.

Clemson athletic director Dan Radkovich announced the addition of softball in the spring of 2017, and that the softball program would be taking the place of the school's women's diving team. The Tigers will be the Atlantic Coast Conference's 13th softball team.
