Missouri’s Hearnes Center Won’t Require New Floor

Officials at the University of Missouri are likely breathing easier this week, as it appears that the damage done to an athletics arena isn’t as bad as originally thought.

Flooding due to a broken water main caused more than $100,000 worth of damage to the Hearnes Center, which hosts Missouri’s women’s volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics and indoor track and field events. In the wake of the break, officials were concerned that the original playing surface at the arena, which had been installed in the 1970s, could have contained mercury which would have likely led to additional repair costs.

While mitigation and refurbishing efforts are ongoing, an athletic department spokesperson told local CBS affiliate KRCG that mercury is no longer a concern.

It’s possible that the arena could be back to full operation by the end of the month.
