The University of Nebraska sent a check in the amount of $128,009 this week to Bo Pelini, who hasn't coached a football game at Nebraska since 2014.
With that final monthly outlay, Nebraska has now paid $6.54 million in severance to Pelini, who was on the Huskers' payroll since being fired after the 2014 regular season. With a 67-27 record at Nebraska, Pelini posted more victories in his first seven seasons at the school than did legendary coach Tom Osborne.
The payment also puts Nebraska in the clear in terms of payroll obligations to former coaches and athletics administrators. Pelini, whose payout was mitigated by his salary as Youngstown State’s coach, was the last of the coaches on the monthly severance program.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, Nebraska paid off former football coach Mike Riley in December 2017 with a lump sum of $6,253,393 after Riley took a job at Oregon State. Then in June 2018, former Husker athletic director Shawn Eichorst took a job with Texas and received a lump sum of $762,439.
