Ball State AD Mark Sandy to Retire

Ball State Athletics Director Mark Sandy announced Monday that he'll retire at the end of June after leading the Cardinals' athletic department for more than three years.

On Sandy's watch, new facilities opened for the Ball State football, baseball and golf teams, and a new facility for the basketball and volleyball programs will be ready for the 2018-19 school year.

"It has been a pleasure to serve with the student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff," Sandy said in a press release. "Together we have worked hard to improve our department and add to its successful history."

Eight different Ball State programs have won Mid-American Conference titles since Sandy became athletics director in February 2015. The 2017-18 basketball season has been especially successful as the women's team started the season 11-0 and the men's team defeated No. 8 Notre Dame for its first victory over a ranked team since 2001.

Big Ten honors to IU, Purdue

Purdue's Vincent Edwards was named Big Ten Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday, the second straight Purdue player to take the award after Carsen Edwards was honored a week ago.

Vincent Edwards earned this week's award after scoring 30 points in a win over Michigan and adding 19 in a victory over Indiana, while shooting better than 61 percent from the field. He helped No. 3 Purdue remain undefeated in the Big Ten and set a school record with its 17th straight win. ... The Big Ten also announced that Indiana guard Jaelynn Penn was named the conference Women's Freshman of the Week. It is the second straight week she has won the award, after averaging 11 points and 4.5 rebounds in a pair of Hoosiers victories.

Tech's Gary again Player of Week

Indiana Tech center Keanna Gary was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for the second week in a row and fourth time this season. The senior averaged 26.5 points and 17 rebounds in her two games last week as No. 8 Indiana Tech won both contests to run its win streak to 14 games.

Tech bowlers pile up honors

Indiana Tech freshman Maryssa Carey was named the WHAC Women's Bowler of the Week for a conference-record fifth time this season and second in a row. She posted a second-place finish at an American Heartland Intercollegiate Bowling Conference event with a five-game score of 1,041. ... Tech freshman Cory Hersha was named the league's Men's Bowler of the Week for the third time. He set four- and five-game season-highs with 930 and 1,223 in a pair of AHIBC events.

Polls roundup

Villanova, Virginia, and Purdue retained the top three spots in the men's basketball AP Top 25. No. 2 Virginia garnered 17 of 65 first-place votes after a 65-63 win over No. 4 Duke on Saturday. Duke remained at No. 4 despite the loss, and Michigan State ascended to No. 5 to give the Big Ten two teams in the top 5. ... The top five remained unchanged in the women's poll as UConn continues to be the unanimous No. 1 team. The Huskies face No. 7 South Carolina on Thursday. Notre Dame is No. 5. ... IPFW's men's volleyball team is ranked No. 15 in the American Volleyball Coach's Association poll following a 7-0 start to the season. It's the first time the Mastodons have been ranked since April 2015.

Garty named top wrestler

Indiana Tech senior Thomas Garty won his first Sooner Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week award. The 12th-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds wrestled at 157 pounds in the Greyhound Open at the University of Indianapolis and won his second title of the season while scoring 24.5 team points for the Warriors.

Tech freshman takes honor

Indiana Tech's Lenae Ludy earned the WHAC's Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week award. The freshman won the Findlay Classic and Elite Throws high jump title Saturday, her first title as a Warrior, after clearing the 5-foot-7 bar on her first attempt, a season-high jump for her.
