Facility Friday: MLB Parks, KU Volleyball Venue

The Oakland A’s released plans for a new ballpark in East Oakland. The plans call for a two-part project: the new ballpark at Howard Terminal and the redevelopment of the Oakland Coliseum. The proposed ballpark would be financed 100 percent by private funds, and include seating for 34,000, along with an “elevated park” that would surround the stadium bowl. The Texas Rangers released a 3D model of their new ballpark, Globe Life Field, which is expected to open for the 2020 season. The $1.2 billion ballpark will feature a retractable roof, which you can watch in action in miniature in the embed below. — Dallas News

Sticking with MLB, the Portland Diamond Project, a group supporting bringing an MLB franchise to Portland, Ore., announced that it had signed an agreement in principle to develop property for a proposed ballpark. The Port of Portland’s 45-acre Terminal 2 property is the proposed site. The agreement will set in motion a process for the group to work with the city, as well as other local stakeholders, to develop a ballpark on the site. — portlanddiamondproject.com

The University of Kansas is preparing to demolish the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, home to the school’s women’s volleyball program. Demolition is expected to begin Dec. 7, and construction of a new, $10 million facility is slated to begin right afterward. The new facility will reportedly seat 2,300, up from 1,300 at the current facility. The KU volleyball team should be playing in a new building by the start of next season. — kusports.com

Amid dwindling attendance at college football games nationwide, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is reportedly changing its plans to expand Cajun Field. Now, instead of adding seats, the school is focused on renovating the facility. Specifics on the plans have not yet been made public. — Daily Advertiser
