Social media got the best of a Norwalk, Ohio rec center over the weekend after rumors of a camera in the men’s changing room surfaced on Facebook.
According to the Norwalk Reflector, a Facebook user named Terry Mayfield posted to Facebook, saying he’d noticed a camera in the shower drain of the men’s changing room at the Ernsthausen Community Center.
“It was the blinking red light that gave it away,” Mayfield wrote on Facebook.
Police were called to investigate and the rumors proved unfounded. Police revealed that the “blinking red light” was actually the reflection off a sequin that had likely fallen from a bathing suit and gotten lodged in the drain.
“There was no camera and there never was,” said police chief Mike Conney.
The front desk was flooded with calls after Mayfield’s post hit Facebook. The post, which was originally made at 11:22 a.m. on Friday had garnered 92 comments and 313 shares by 7 p.m. the same day.
“It just shows you how fast things take off when you post something on social media,” Conney said, adding if people suspect criminal activity, they should report it to police — not social media.
