Facility Friday: Marshall Baseball, Hilton Coliseum Upgrade

Marshall University has purchased land on which it plans to build a new, 3,500-seat baseball stadium. The school expects construction bids to open in November, and groundbreaking to occur in March 2020. Costs for the facility are expected to be between $18 and $20 million. — Charleston Gazette-Mail

Iowa State University is reportedly mulling a $25 million renovation to Hilton Coliseum. The home of Cyclone basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and other campus events, the 47-year-old facility could get wider concourses, improved concessions, and address aging mechanical systems if the board of regents grants its permission to pursue the project. — The Gazette

Kent State University’s basketball and volleyball programs are set to get a new $1.6 million practice facility. The new facility will be housed in the school’s M.A.C.C. Annex, and will provide the court sports teams a place to practice when there are other events occupying their current practice space. — KentWired.com

The University of Georgia is allocating $1.2 million for a design study which will look at changes to the school’s Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall. Documents obtained by 247Sports say the study will include upgrading existing space, and adding new construction to the facility’s weight room, training area, locker room, offices and more. The project is still in early stages, but is expected to ultimately cost $50 million. — 247Sports

Steve Ballmer, owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, said that despite the roadblocks and challenges involved, he’s determined to build a new arena specifically for his team. Though not likely to open to 2024, Ballmer’s vision for the project includes both a new competition arena with 18,000-20,000 seats, a new practice facility, team offices, a sports medicine clinic, parking facilities and more. The Clippers currently share the Staples Center with their rival Lakers. — NBA.com
