The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is celebrating the completion of multiple projects this month.

On Jan. 17, student-athletes got their first look inside the new UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex, which underwent $10 million in enhancements.

  • The new buildings include more than 13,500 square feet of space for locker rooms for the men's and women's soccer and track and field programs, athletic training rooms, meeting rooms and coaches' offices.
  • Additional enhancements include a new goalkeeper and skills training area as well as the Hinojosa Family Press Box and an upgraded sound system, which kicked off the upgrades in the fall of 2022.

The UTRGV Fieldhouse, which was built in 1969, also saw multiple enhancements, such as new ribbon and video boards, new seating and a redesigned court.

  • The Fieldhouse was transformed with the construction of a brand new 15,000-square-foot atrium with a lobby that will include a new entrance, new box office, new, unique way of watching games at the baseline club, a designated area for the hall of fame and hall of honor, a team store, new concessions, and new restrooms, is expected to be complete in the spring of 2025.

On Wednesday, golf student-athletes were able to see inside the new $3 million Vaqueros Golf Center at Champion Lakes Golf Course.

  • The Vaqueros Golf Center includes more than 4,200 square feet of space for locker rooms for the men's and women's golf programs, two hitting bays, a study lounge, nutrition station and viewing area, and coaches' offices.

UTRGV is amid more than $85 million in facilities enhancements affecting all 18 university sports.

A new professional soccer stadium is planned to be built and open to the public in north downtown Omaha, Neb., by spring 2026.

The $60 million, 7,000-seat stadium, which will be the home of Union Omaha, is expected to increase the city’s sports profile in an area that already includes College World Series host stadium Charles Schwab Field and the CHI Health Center.

More projects:

  • The Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center will be the newest indoor community recreation center to offer much needed services to the City of Allen, Texas, and the broader community.
  • The University of Maine in Orono, Maine, and University of Maine Foundation announced in December plans for the state-of-the-art New Balance Track & Field and Soccer Complex, made possible by a $7 million commitment from New Balance Athletics.
  • Drawings were revealed Friday of a possible 380,000-square-foot event center and arena in Kalamazoo, Mich., to replace multiple facilities. The proposed $300 million center would be built along Kalamazoo Avenue, Westnedge Avenue, and Water Street. The Kalamazoo Wings and Western Michigan University hockey and basketball would play there.
