Mercer University — a private research university in Macon, Ga. — is undertaking three building projects on campus that will benefit student-athletes on eight teams.

The plans include a baseball performance center, a new home for tennis and golf, and a multitier tailgating area in an end zone at Five Star Stadium.

The Mercer baseball team will get a 9,200-square-foot facility on the third base side of Claude Smith Field at OrthoGeorgia Park.

The two-story Cantrell Family Baseball Performance Center will feature batting cages, pitching lanes, a strength-and-conditioning area, a team meeting room, a recruiting lounge, coaches’ offices, locker rooms and a spectator balcony.

The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Downtown Development Authority has received the donation of a property that’s needed for development of a proposed 8,500-seat soccer stadium adjacent to the David D. Hunting YMCA to move forward.

The Downtown Development Authority voted to accept the former Big Boy property at 407 Pearl St. NW. It’s one of several parcels included in the 8.2-acre site where a group of public and private partners want to build the stadium near the corner.

A memo from Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., the nonprofit that oversees the DDA, said Grand Action’s final decision on whether to build the stadium depends on several factors, including community and stakeholder engagement, and securing private- and public-sector funding.

The DDA would also have to sign-off to make the project happen. It owns a large, surface parking lot along Mt. Vernon Avenue where the stadium would be built, and the DDA board would have to approve such a use.

More projects:

  • New renderings were recently released that show how a Major League Baseball stadium in Salt Lake City could look. The Larry H. Miller Co. released the images depicting plans for a 100-acre site along North Temple. LHM said it plans to invest $3.5 billion in the project said it will be an “economic and cultural catalyst” for Salt Lake City’s west side.
  • The City of Reno, Nev., is celebrating Robinhood Park upgrades including a new playground and basketball court, along with a new plaque that honors the late Reno Police Officer Craig Pittman. Funded through a community development block grant, several upgrades were made to Robinhood Park including a resurfaced basketball court, a new inclusive playground, a renovated drip irrigation system and new sidewalks for ADA compliance.
