Construction is underway at St. Lawrence University in New York on the donor-funded Appleton Arena George W. Karpus ’68 Athletic Center, with plans to open in September 2024.

The project will be completed as phase two of the Appleton Arena project, and $11.3 million in gifts and pledges have been raised so far. Ab24 Plain Daily Digs Enews 600x400

The Karpus Athletic Center includes an expansion of the Michael “Buddy” Cornacchia ’74 Strength and Conditioning Center for all student-athletes, as well as new locker rooms and team facilities for the field hockey and softball teams, and the men’s and women’s lacrosse and rowing teams.

An athletic training and treatment center for Division III student-athletes, a dedicated strategy room for coaches, a player’s lounge, and a video/media room are also part of the project.

The University will revamp the current strength and conditioning space utilized by Division III student-athletes in the Stafford Fitness Center in Newell Fieldhouse.

The home stadium for the West Virginia University baseball team is getting upgraded and a new name.

A donor gift will fund upgrades to the Monongalia County Baseball Complex to add an indoor pitching and hitting facility that will be accessible to the Mountaineer baseball program year-round.

The addition to the ballpark will add an 8,200 square-foot structure next to the current clubhouse and include two regulation-size pitching lanes, a soft toss area and two full-size batting lanes. The pitching and batting areas will be outfitted with state-of-the-art Trackman technology to help coaches and players analyze performance. Completion of the indoor hitting and pitching facility is scheduled for February 2025.

The gift includes the renaming of Monongalia County Ballpark; it will now be known as Kendrick Family Ballpark at the Monongalia County Baseball Complex.

WVU did not say in the statement how much the project will cost nor the amount of the donor's gift.
